A Journey of Nostalgia: Cruising the Zuiderdam

Cruising offers a distinctive escape, where adventure meets relaxation, and it is on Holland America Line’s Zuiderdam that such sentiment becomes palpable. Recently, I boarded this charming ship for the Canada & New England Discovery cruise, embarking from Quebec City to the historical harbor of Boston. As I stepped on board, I was instantly absorbed into a world that feels almost timeless, primarily thanks to the overwhelmingly welcoming atmosphere and the smiles of the crew.

Contrary to the digital distractions that have come to dominate our daily lives, one of the most striking features aboard the Zuiderdam was the Game Room. It was a delightful sight to see several dozen passengers immersed in board games and spirited conversations; none seemed engrossed in their electronic devices. The predominant demographic included an array of baby boomers and seniors, many of whom were visibly enjoying this rare moment of what I can only describe as “unplugged camaraderie.”

Operated by attentive waitstaff who kept drinks plentiful, this space fostered interaction and laughter. It was apparent that many guests, celebrating anniversaries and traveling with family across generations, cherished this platform of connection, bonding over timeless games like backgammon and cards rather than scrolling through devices. The Game Room didn’t just serve as an entertainment hub; it transformed into a vibrant social tapestry, woven with friendships, nostalgia, and communal joy.

Evenings on the Zuiderdam came alive in the Rolling Stone Lounge, recently revamped from the original B.B. King’s Blues Club. The resident Rolling Stone Lounge Band provided a delightful mix of classic rock and disco hits, eliciting enthusiastic responses from an audience that effectively defied age by dancing fervently. The atmosphere was electrified further by the regional sensation Breton Thunder, a lively Canadian band known for their infectious Celtic-inspired songs.

Performing twice during our weeklong voyage, they managed to create an ambiance teeming with energy, prompting countless foot-stomps and claps as audiences reveled in the music. High-quality performances didn’t stop there; other entertaining productions, such as “Song & Dance” and “Class Act,” celebrated musical legacies and undoubtedly left the audiences wanting more. Each night on the ship seemed well-curated to ensure no guest went without a rich auditory experience.

Dining underwent a fine transformation across the Zuiderdam’s various eateries. My experiences at both of the specialty restaurants—the distinguished Pinnacle Grill and the more casual Canaletto—were distinct yet equally compelling. The Pinnacle Grill, with its luxe decor and a menu demanding a premium $46 per person for dinner, experienced busy nights filled with eager patrons. While I did encounter a service hiccup—one of my appetizers went inexplicably missing—the overall meal quality shone through, highlighting the chefs’ commitment to delivering exceptional cuisine.

Canaletto offered a different experience altogether, set within the Lido buffet area. Its Italian flair was tempting, and although service lagged at times, the pasta dishes provided a fulfilling reward for my patience. The primary dining room, often overlooked in favor of the specialty restaurants, yielded surprisingly delightful meals; their robust breakfasts were an excellent way to kick-start the day.

Perhaps the most reassuring aspect of my journey aboard the Zuiderdam was the crew. They exuded warmth and professionalism that defined the cruise experience. Their friendly demeanor didn’t just create a sense of comfort—it enriched the journey itself. From the smiling waitstaff to the informative excursion team, it was the little gestures and proactive attitudes that encapsulated what hospitality ought to be.

As we sailed to picturesque destinations including Charlottetown, Sydney, Halifax, and Portland, it was this wholesome atmosphere that transformed a simple sailing into an unforgettable journey. With their polished services, the crew not only catered to our needs but expertly curated an ambiance that we all wanted to return to.

The Zuiderdam provides a sanctuary where nostalgia reigns and new memories blossom through delightful interactions and experiences. In an age where digital engagement often supersedes genuine contact, this cruise stood as a reminder of the significance of human connection. Whether through games, live music, gourmet meals, or the attentive crew, every moment onboard was designed to foster joy—turning a cruise into a remarkable journey.
